Owned by the fabulous Trixie Mattel, the Trixie Motel features seven uniquely themed rooms that are heavy on pink and uber-heavy on kitsch. It’s everything you want in a Palm Springs trip.

The motel is steps away from Palm Springs’s best restaurants and attractions.

The downside: only one of the rooms is wheelchair accessible, but it does sound amazing.

La Quinta Resort and Club:

Looking for a classy 5-star getaway? Check out the La Quinta Resort & Club. Nestled at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, La Quinta Resort & Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, has been the original desert hideaway since the 1920s, featuring beautiful Spanish hacienda-style casitas set among lush grounds accentuated by fragrant citrus trees, colorful gardens, sparkling pools and fountains, and picturesque courtyards. Stone Creek Campground:  Accessible campsites and no-flush restrooms are available at this campground. No showers are available. The campfire center permits wheelchair access.

Trails
The Panoramic Point Interpretive Trail is a 0.67-mile accessible loop trail winding through a lovely mixed conifer forest to a panoramic overlook point. The trailhead is in the Stone Creek Campground area of the park near campsite #14, off State Route 243. The surface is compacted aggregate and soil. There are several armored crossings on the trail where water flows over the trail during rain events. This may be challenging for some users. This trail has panels with many touchable elements and an audio tour (downloadable) that should make it more useful to persons with low vision and others. Rich with Native American history and culture, Tahquitz Canyon provides a glimpse into the ancestral livelihoods of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Day Trips From Palm Springs, California

Salvation Mountain And East Jesus

In the middle of the Sonoran Desert, midway between San Diego and Los Angeles, you’ll find a community of around 150 permanent residents living off the grid in California with no official electricity, running water, sewers, toilets, law enforcement, or trash pickup service. Slab City, California, or The Slabs as it’s called, is a large snowbird community in Imperial County used by squatters and recreational vehicle owners from all over North America. It’s known as the last free place in the United States.

Salvation Mountain a massive work of art created by local resident Leonard Knight. He began work on the piece in 1984, though his first version collapsed, and it took quite some time to find materials strong enough to withstand the harsh environment. The artwork is made of straw, adobe, and thousands of gallons of lead-free, latex paint. It features multiple bible verses and murals painted with Christian sayings. Knight said God guided him in its construction.

While Salvation Mountain is full of religious text and iconography, East Jesus actually has no religious connotations. Rather than referencing the lord and Savior, Jesus. East Jesus refers to “east of Jesus,” a location in the middle of nowhere, off the grid, and operating without municipal utilities. Home to an incredible art installation in the middle of the North American deserts is East Jesus. East of nowhere.

Local residents offer guided tours of East Jesus throughout the day. I was a little nervous entering the property since people actually live on the grounds, and I didn’t want to accidentally wander into someone’s personal living space. If you enter through the main East Jesus sculpture garden, you should run right into one of the locals who will be more than happy to show you around.
