Where to Stay in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, attracting millions of visitors each year. With its sunny weather, beautiful beaches, and world-famous attractions, it’s no wonder people flock to LA. But what’s the best place to stay in Los Angeles? I’m glad you asked. In this guide, I’ll walk you through some helpful suggestions for the best resorts, hotels, and hostels in Los Angeles and the surrounding area.

Picking the best place to stay in Los Angeles comes down to three things, your budget, which area(s) you want to see, and if you have access to a car. Let’s start first with where to stay in Los Angeles when it comes to neighborhoods. LA is a big place. If it’s your first time visiting LA it can easily feel overwhelming. You also almost certainly need a car or be prepared to spend money on Lyft and Uber if you plan on seeing a lot of the city. However, I’ve tried to add a few options below that are close to public transportation, making it a bit easier to explore multiple areas without renting a car.

Want to know what to do in Los Angeles? Check out my Bucket List Guide to LA.

Best Areas to Stay in LA

Santa Monica Pier Best Place to Stay in LA

Santa Monica Pier

The Westside:

Are you looking for a beach vacation? This is where you want to be. Look for hotels or Vrbo accommodations in Santa Monica, Venice, or Malibu to be near the action. Also consider Culver City, which is a little further inland, and a bit less expensive but still technically part of the West Side.

Silver Lake/ Los Feliz/ Koreatown:

Want to be close to Griffith Observatory, Griffith Park, The Greek Theater, and Sunset Junction and still be close to Hollywood? Then this is the best area to stay in LA. The Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Koreatown area is filled with hip coffee shops, restaurants, and quirky attractions like Time Travel Mart and Wacko Soap Plant. This is also a great residential neighborhood and an ideal area to rent an Airbnb or Vrbo property.

Downtown Los Angeles:

Looking to visit our city’s fine museums, great restaurants, art galleries, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, and/or sporting events? Looking for good walkability and access to multiple Metro stops? Come to DTLA. There are a wide variety of great hotels at various price points. Full disclosure, I’ve lived in Downtown Los Angeles for the last ten years and positively adore it. From the super cool Arts District to swanky South Park, and the Historic Core, there’s plenty to see in Downtown LA. Check out my what to do in DTLA guide to learn about some of the area’s main attractions.

The Valley:

If you’re visiting with kids and want to visit Universal City, Universal Studios, Warner Brothers Studios, and have quick access to Hollywood, the Valley is a where to stay in LA. The Valley is quite safe and largely residential, but if you’ve come for the theme park action, it’s one of the best places to stay in Los Angeles for families. A lot of people mock The Valley as terminally un-hip, but Ventura Boulevard has become filled with top-rated restaurants and bars in recent years making it a lot cooler than it used to be.

Best Place to Stay Los Angeles Where to Stay LA

The Hollywood Sign at Sunset

Hollywood/ West Hollywood:

Looking to see the Walk of Fame, Hollywood Sign, Paramount Studios, The Hollywood Hills, Chinese Theater, Madame Tussauds, the El Capitan, and/or the hot nightlife scene of the Sunset Strip and West Hollywood? Then head to the Hollywood area. This is the best place to stay in Los Angeles for nightlife and those big entertainment attractions. This neighborhood is family-friendly by day and a playground for adults by night.

Beverly Hills:

Do your holiday plans include high-end shopping, spotting celebrity homes, or relaxing in a posh, high-end hotel? Come to Beverly Hills. You’ll also be a short drive from Hollywood/West Hollywood and about 9 miles from the beach. The only downside is you’ll pay premium prices to stay at these incredibly high-end hotels. If you’re looking for budget accommodations, this is not the area.

Inglewood/Los Angeles International Airport:

Don’t stay here unless you have an early morning flight and need quick access to the airport. You won’t be near anything and you’ll be listening to flight traffic at all hours of the day and night.

Laguna Beach Places to Stay LA

Laguna Beach

Orange County/Anaheim:

There are many fun things to do in Orange County. If you love the beach, are visiting with kids, or looking to visit Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Legoland, SeaWorld, and some amazing Orange County tide pools and beaches, these are the best places to stay outside of Los Angeles. There are tons of things to do in Laguna Beach and the surrounding Orange County beach cities. Look to stay in Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, or Anaheim. Staying in this area will put you next door to Disneyland, California Adventure, and Knotts Berry Farm and about an hour’s drive from Legoland and the San Diego Zoo.

Best Places to Stay in LA

Now you have a better idea of LA’s neighborhoods. But “where do I stay?” I hear you ask. Worry not. I got you. Below are my picks for the best hotels in each Los Angeles neighborhood. I’ve tried to include as many price points as possible to give you the best options for your individual budget.

Where to Stay in Los Angeles, In Conclusion

If you’re looking to travel to Los Angeles, I hope this guide proved helpful and you found the best place to stay in Los Angeles, for you and your needs. I’ve included a lot of different price points and neighborhoods, some with excellent access to public transportation, Yes, public transportation exists in Los Angeles. Though it’s admittedly not nearly as good as cities like New York City or San Francisco. I still recommend renting a car if you have the means, as it gives you significantly more freedom and access to the city.

LA’s Metro system and buses are both wheelchair accessible and equipped with ramps or wheelchair lifts.

I hope you enjoy your stay in LA!
