Things To Do In The Arts District Los Angeles CA

I’ve called The Arts District, Los Angeles, CA home for the past 10 years. The truth is, in my 24 years living all over LA, it’s been my favorite neighborhood to call home. The area is very walkable, filled with some of the best restaurants in the world, amazing street art, fabulous art galleries, exciting bars, arcades for adults, and other fun happenings.

It’s important to differentiate the DTLA Arts District from the NOHO Arts District, Los Angeles, CA. You may be wondering, how big is Los Angeles that it has not one but two Arts Districts? Los Angeles is a big place. The NOHO Arts District is located in the valley and is decidedly less exciting. I should know, I also lived in the valley for 10 years.

This guide is my love letter to the place I call home. I hope you find the Downtown LA Arts District as intriguing, colorful, and amazing as I do. I hope you come to visit and enjoy some of the amazing restaurants, great shopping, galleries, and other fun things this neighborhood has to offer.

History of The Art District In Los Angeles

The Downtown LA Arts District has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Originally an industrial area, the Arts District has undergone significant transformations to become the vibrant and eclectic neighborhood it is today.

In the 1970s and 1980s, artists began to move into the area, attracted by the low rents and large industrial spaces that were ideal for creating and showcasing their work. This influx of creative individuals laid the foundation for the artistic community that thrives in the Arts District today.

Over the years, old warehouses and factories were repurposed into art galleries, studios, restaurants, and shops, giving the neighborhood its unique blend of grit and creativity. The walls became massive canvases for street artists, turning the streets into an ever-evolving outdoor gallery.

In recent years, the Arts District has experienced rapid gentrification, with tech companies, upscale boutiques, and trendy eateries moving in. While this has brought economic growth to the area, it has also raised concerns about affordability and the displacement of long-time residents and artists.

Despite these challenges, the Arts District remains a hub of creativity and innovation in Los Angeles. Its history as an industrial area turned artistic enclave has shaped its identity as a place where art, culture, and community converge in a dynamic urban landscape.

Walk The 6th Street Bridge

The 6th Street Bridge in Los Angeles, known for its iconic arches stretching gracefully over the Los Angeles River, has long been a significant landmark in the city's landscape. Built in the late 1930s, this historic bridge connected the downtown Arts District to Boyle Heights. With its distinctive Art Deco design, the 6th Street Bridge has been featured in numerous films, music videos, and pop culture references over the years.

However, due to structural issues, the bridge had to be demolished and replaced with a new, more modern design. The new 6th Street Bridge, with its sleek and contemporary architecture, aims to honor the legacy of its predecessor while meeting current safety standards.

Pedestrians can walk the bridge for great views of the city. There are plans to eventually build a sprawling park underneath the bridge, which I for one, eagerly anticipate.
