The 40 Most Accessible Cities In The World

Let’s face it, as disabled travelers we know that finding accessible hotels, tourist attractions, and public transportation can be difficult, especially when traveling overseas. This is especially challenging for wheelchair users. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I am not currently a wheelchair user, but I have been at various points of my illness. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome has forced me into three spinal fusion surgeries which, in turn, has drastically impacted my mobility. This is all to say that I know what it’s like to navigate the world with a variety of mobility equipment.

I’ve also experienced the pitfalls of wildly inaccessible cities like Beijing, China, and the frustrating difficulty of many European cities (hello cobblestone.) But it’s not all bad news. While I still have a bit of envy when reading other travel blogs and seeing the limitless possibilities they have when traveling, the good news is the world is progressing when it comes to accessibility and we as disabled travelers have more options than ever before.

With so much progress being made in the world when it comes to accessibility in tourism, I thought it would be well worth compiling a list of the most wheelchair friendly cities in the world. You don’t have to be a wheelchair user to enjoy the cities on this list. Their accessible features like ramps, elevators, wide sidewalks, accessible hotel rooms, and public transportation make them excellent locations for holidays disabled travelers can enjoy.

I’ve taken several things into account when making this list:

Accommodation – when looking at Trip Advisor I took into account the percentage of listings that had accessible rooms with wheelchair access.

Attractions - the number of accessible tours available on Get Your Guide.

Airports - It doesn’t do much good if a city is wheelchair accessible if the airport is not.

Public Transportation - is there accessible city transportation for disabled people on public buses and trains?

I’ve also tried to include a variety of places from across the globe and any travel tips, and hotel and tour recommendations I have for making your trip more enjoyable. From beaches to mountains to holidays smack dab in a city center, there should be something on this list for everyone.

It’s also one of the most blind-friendly cities. The city has extensively improved its public transportation, with the majority of train and subway stations equipped with ramps, elevators, and tactile paving to aid visually impaired individuals. Additionally, the majority of buses are low-floor and accommodate wheelchair users, further enhancing accessibility across the city.
