Or perhaps you’re here planning your first trip and looking for suggestions for fun Orlando activities. Whether it’s your first trip or your fiftieth, I’m here to highlight the the best things to do in Orlando, including lots of popular attractions as well as some somewhat unique things to do in Orlando, Florida that aren’t theme park related. Yes, things to do in Orlando for adults actually exist! So buckle up, keep your hands and arms inside the cart at all times, and get ready to explore some accessible and fun things to do in Orlando, Florida!

How To Get To Orlando, Florida

To reach the city of Orlando, Florida, there are several convenient transportation options available. If you're traveling from afar, the fastest and most common method is by air. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is well-connected, serving numerous domestic and international flights. From the airport, you can easily rent a car or utilize public transportation, such as shuttles, to reach your desired destination in Orlando.

Another alternative is to embark on a scenic road trip, a la my family in the late 90s. Pack everyone in the car and enjoy hours of your kids squabbling as you count down the mile markers on major highways like I-4 and the Florida Turnpike, which provide convenient access to the city by car.

If you prefer a more leisurely journey, Amtrak operates train services to Orlando, offering a comfortable and scenic ride for those coming from nearby cities. I’ve also traveled by Amtrak from the NYC area to Orlando, and if you don’t mind the slower pace, it’s kind of fun to watch the country roll by outside.

Once you've arrived, Orlando's efficient public transportation system, Lynx, offers bus routes connecting various attractions and neighborhoods within the city. And good news; all of the over 500 LYNX metro buses are wheelchair accessible.

Best Time To Visit Orlando, Florida

Orlando, Florida, known as the "Theme Park Capital of the World," offers endless opportunities for fun and adventure. The best time to visit this vibrant city depends on your preferences and what you are looking to experience. It also depends on your tolerance for heat and humidity.

For those seeking pleasant weather and fewer crowds, the ideal time to visit Orlando is during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). During these months, the temperature hovers around the 70s and 80s, making it comfortable for outdoor activities such as exploring the various theme parks or enjoying outdoor water parks. Additionally, the lines tend to be shorter, allowing you to make the most of your time exploring the iconic attractions.

However, if you don't mind the humid and hot climate, visiting during the summer months of June to August could also be an option. This is a popular time for families with school-aged children, so expect larger crowds and longer wait times.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Orlando will depend on your personal preferences, whether it’s enjoying cooler weather or braving the heat for a festive and lively atmosphere.

Where To Stay In Orlando, Florida

If you’re coming for the theme parks, you can’t do better than staying at The Grand Floridian. If you’re not looking to make theme parks the center of your trip, try the 4-star Embassy Suites by Hilton, Orlando (click for rates and details) located in downtown Orlando. This Hilton hotel is moderately priced and is near several major attractions. It’s perfectly located in the Lake Eola central business district of Downtown Orlando and less than 25 minutes from Orlando International Airport (MCO). Whether you're traveling for business or on a family vacation, the hotel features comfortable and spacious two-room wheelchair-accessible suites for your stay. Guests will enjoy easy access to all the nearby local area attractions and the Orlando Orange County Convention Center.

You’ll find I’ve included a nice balance of things that are fun for the whole family as well as fun things to do in Orlando for adults.

Walt Disney World Resort

The most famous of all the Orlando attractions, visiting Walt Disney World is like stepping into a magical wonderland filled with endless excitement and enchantment. The meticulously designed theme parks, including the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom offer a myriad of thrilling rides, captivating shows, and immersive experiences for visitors of all ages.

Whether you are soaring through the skies on Space Mountain, exploring diverse cultures in the World Showcase, or embarking on an African safari adventure, every moment at Walt Disney World is an unforgettable memory waiting to be made. 3. Old Town

Located in Kissimmee just minutes from Disney, Universal, Sea World, and International Drive, Old Town is a unique 18-acre area featuring over 70 shops, restaurants, bars, rides, and family-friendly attractions. Old Town has been around for the last 30 years attracting visitors and locals alike. However, the town is made up to look as though it’s been around a lot longer than that.

Guests can mine for gold at Black Market Minerals, catch a magic show at the Great Magic Hall, try a classic game of Skee-Ball at Happy Days Family Amusement Center, or relax with a cocktail while enjoying free live entertainment on Trophy Row Stage.

Old Town also hosts some enticing weekly events including America’s longest-running weekly car show and cruise every Saturday. Step back in time and experience a show with hundreds of classic cars followed by our Saturday Nite Classic Car Cruise starting at 8:30 pm.

Accessibility: Old Town has plenty of wheelchair-accessible shops, restaurants, and attractions to entertain.

Accessibility: The Zoo’s guest paths are a combination of solid surface pavement and wooden boardwalks. The walkways are large enough to accommodate mobility devices.

Manual wheelchairs are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis at the Admissions window for $12 each. Flatbed wagons and double-seater wagons are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis at the Admissions window for $12 and $15 each, respectively.

Guests requiring the use of a mobility device are welcome to bring their own to the Zoo. If you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact the Zoo’s accessibility coordinator at (407) 323-4450 ext. 121 prior to your visit.

For guests with sensory needs, sensory bags will be available at the Zoo’s Admissions Window and are equipped with noise-canceling headphones, cue cards, fidget tools, and other resources. These bags are available to borrow, free of charge, for guests with sensory needs. All bags and items will be properly disinfected after each use.

5. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

The Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex is a thrilling destination for space enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. From interactive exhibits and awe-inspiring displays to behind-the-scenes tours, visitors can immerse themselves in the fascinating world of NASA.

The Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit is a major highlight, allowing guests to witness the breathtaking grandeur of a real space shuttle up close. Additionally, the Astronaut Encounter program offers a chance to meet and interact with real astronauts, gaining invaluable insights into their extraordinary experiences.

For those seeking an even more immersive adventure, the complex offers bus tours that take visitors to historic launch sites, lending a deeper understanding of the history and significance of the Kennedy Space Center. All tour buses are equipped with wheelchair- and scooter-accessible lifts. Access to the IMAX® theater is available via ground-level entrances. Visitors may also use wheelchair-accessible lifts to gain access to upper seating locations. Companion seating is available.

At Shuttle Launch Experience, visitors using standard wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs, and electronic convenience vehicles can enter through the gantry entrance with their party. The prelaunch briefing features a reflective captioning panel located at the back of the theater to aid guests with hearing impairments. For the launch simulation, each crew cabin is equipped with an accessible seat that includes a pivoting grab bar that allows visitors to transfer directly from a wheelchair to the seat. The seat also has a five-point harness attachment, as well as an extended seat pan. If a visitor is not able to transfer to the seat or decides not to take part in the simulation, a Launch Observation Room is located near the crew cabin. Outfitted with a flat-screen television and three cabin-viewing televisions, visitors can experience the launch without the simulation, as well as watch other members of their party. Parties are immediately reunited after the launch simulation to exit together.

Discovery Cove can accommodate guests with disabilities who are able to maneuver themselves with limited assistance (or with the aid of a personal assistant) during their dolphin experience and in the various wading locations. Discovery Cove also offers specially designed outdoor wheelchairs with oversized tires for easy maneuvering on the beach. The wheelchairs are not self-maneuverable and guests will need assistance operating them. Wheelchairs can be reserved by calling 407-513-4600.

7. Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

The museum offers assisted listening devices, which are typically used for lectures and tour settings; these can be used by individuals as well. Guide dogs are welcome.

Accessibility: Typhoon Lagoon is accessible to people with limited mobility. Guest Relations has a limited number of water-accessible wheelchairs available for free, but a valid ID must be left at Guest Relations. ECVs are not permitted in the water.

For Blizzard Beach, A limited number of water-accessible wheelchairs are available at Guest Relations for no charge on a first-come first-serve basis. Also, guests must leave a valid ID at the location until the wheelchair is returned. Strollers or ECVs are not permitted in the water, but guests may bring their wheelchairs into the Melt-Away Bay up to the midpoint of the rear wheels.

Most Blizzard Beach attractions require guests to transfer from their wheelchairs to the attraction either by themselves or with help from a member of their party. A member of the party is required to meet the disabled guest at the bottom of the attraction to assist the rider in getting to the edge of the pool and exit into the chair. Cast Members are not permitted to assist in transferring Guests to/from their wheelchairs physically.

In addition to accessible viewing stations in all of their shows, the park’s Gatorland Express Train Ride was upgraded to allow wheelchair access and security on the train cars back in 2001.

In areas inaccessible to wheelchairs, such as a sand pit where patrons can get close to the gators, they accommodate people who use wheelchairs by bringing the animals to them for an up-close encounter.

23. Jack Kerouac House

Located in the vibrant neighborhood of College Park, Orlando, the Jack Kerouac House is a hidden gem for lovers of literature and beat culture. Once the home of the renowned writer Jack Kerouac, and the place where he wrote ‘Dharma Bums,’ this quaint house now serves as a writer's retreat, offering a unique opportunity for aspiring writers to immerse themselves in the creative ambiance that inspired Kerouac's iconic works.

In 2013, the Kerouac House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Unfortunately, there is no way to access the inside of the house. That honor is reserved for a writer in residency. (More about that on the Kerouac Project website.) But you can drive by and grab a glimpse of the outside.
