The best time to visit Denver, Colorado is during the months of May to mid-October. This period promises pleasant weather with average temperatures ranging from the 60s to the 80s Fahrenheit. Spring and fall showcase vibrant colors, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking in the nearby Rocky Mountains or strolling through the beautiful gardens of Denver.
Summer months offer longer days and abundant sunshine, perfect for exploring the city's artsy neighborhoods, attending outdoor concerts, or indulging in the numerous festivals that take place. The mild and dry climate during this time ensures comfortable exploration, while the availability of outdoor events and attractions makes it the best time to experience the true essence of Denver.

How To Get To Denver
Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast seeking adventure in the Rocky Mountains or looking to explore the city's vibrant culture and art scene, getting to Denver is a breeze. Here are some travel options to consider when planning your journey.
By Air
Denver International Airport (DEN) is the primary gateway to the city and one of the busiest airports in the country. It has numerous domestic and international flights connecting Denver to major cities around the world. If you're traveling from afar, catching a flight to Denver is undoubtedly the fastest and most convenient option.
By Car
If you prefer the freedom of the open road and want to enjoy the scenic landscapes along the way, driving to Denver might be the perfect choice for you. Several major highways, including I-25, I-70, and I-76, converge in Denver, making it easily accessible from various parts of the United States. Just make sure to plan your route accordingly and consider the road conditions, as weather can be unpredictable in certain months.
By Bus
For budget-conscious travelers or those who prefer a more relaxed journey, taking a bus to Denver is an economical and environmentally friendly option. Several bus companies operate routes to Denver from neighboring cities, including Greyhound and Megabus. The city is well-connected, and you can find direct routes from many major cities in the United States.
By Train
Amtrak's California Zephyr route, one of the most scenic train journeys in the country, stops in Denver. If you're looking for a unique and picturesque way to reach the city, consider taking the train. The California Zephyr travels from Chicago to San Francisco, passing through the stunning landscapes of the Rocky Mountains, including breathtaking stretches in Colorado.

How To Get Around Denver
To make the most of your time in Denver, it's essential to know how to get around efficiently. Let's explore the various transportation options available in the city:
Public Transportation
Denver boasts an efficient public transportation system known as the Regional Transportation District (RTD). The RTD includes buses and light rail trains that connect various neighborhoods and suburbs within the city. Utilizing public transportation is not only convenient but also an environmentally-friendly option. You can purchase a MyRide card, load it with funds, and use it to pay for your fare on buses and trains.
All RTD buses, including the Free MallRide, Free MetroRide, and rail vehicles, are accessible for mobility aids such as wheelchairs, electric scooters, segways, walkers, and crutches. Bus and rail operators are trained to assist passengers with disabilities boarding or exiting the vehicle.
Light Rail
Denver's light rail system is an excellent way to explore the city. With multiple lines crisscrossing Denver and its suburbs, the light rail offers a convenient way to reach popular destinations such as Union Station, Pepsi Center, and the Denver Tech Center. The trains are reliable, and comfortable, and provide stunning views of the city as you glide from one station to another.
Denver’s light rail system is fully wheelchair accessible. The light rail features six lines and 46 stations. Each station is accessible via a ramp or lift, and the first car of each train is equipped with a fold-out ramp. Spaces are available for wheelchair users.
Taxis and Rideshares
Taxis and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are widely available in Denver. With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can request a ride to your desired destination. This option is particularly convenient if you're in a hurry or traveling in a group. Rideshare apps also provide the advantage of estimating fares upfront, so you can budget accordingly.
Walking
Denver is a highly walkable city, especially in the downtown area. Many popular attractions, restaurants, and shops are within reasonable walking distance of each other. Exploring the city on foot allows you to soak in the vibrant atmosphere, discover hidden gems, and take in the stunning views of the Rocky Mountains.

Denver Altitude Warning
One thing I will caution about Denver is the altitude can make some people sick. Admittedly I had some shortness of breath when visiting Denver the first few days. If you’re older, have asthma, are overweight, or have high blood pressure, you may be more likely to experience altitude sickness.
Symptoms of altitude sickness include light-headedness, fatigue, rapid heart rate, vomiting or nausea, shortness of breath, and swollen hands and feet. If these symptoms become serious, it is imperative that you get medical help.
To deal with altitude sickness get plenty of rest, and if needed see a doctor for medication, oxygen, and or IV therapy for fluids and anti-nausea medications. Most people will adjust in a couple of days to the altitude and not experience severe symptoms.
We were only in Denver for four days. By day three I was breathing normally without medical assistance. Bottom line, if you have any of the medical conditions that make you more prone to altitude sickness, it’s best to plan to take things slow for your first few days in Denver.

If you’re looking for a great group walking tour, this is the perfect one. Denver is known for its amazing craft beer scene. The city is even home to the American Beer Festival. Denver offers numerous wheelchair-accessible brewery tours, each with varying themes. Here are a few of my favorite tours:

Whichever tour you choose, you’re sure to experience some amazing brews. We chose the RiNo Beer and Graffiti Tour and were blown away by the tasty beer and kombucha selection. Our guide’s beer knowledge and ability to taper the tour to the interests of the group were truly amazing. I cannot recommend this tour enough. Also, try the Nobody’s Darlin at Ratio Beerworks. You won’t be disappointed.
Denver Botanic Gardens
2. Denver Botanic Gardens
Sure there are botanic gardens in other cities, but how many of them can say they were built on top of an old graveyard? Such is the history of Denver’s Botanic Gardens.
Denver Botanic Gardens showcases a wide range of gardens and collections on 24 acres. Distinctive gardens define and celebrate a Western identity and a unique high-altitude climate and geography. Visit the Freyer–Newman Center. The Center is a celebration of the fusion of science and art. The Center houses the Helen Fowler Library, the Sturm Family Auditorium, art galleries, herbaria, classrooms, the School of Botanical Art & Illustration, and the Copper Door Coffee Roasters coffee shop.

Accessibility: Most of their indoor and outdoor gardens and facilities, including restrooms and classrooms, are wheelchair accessible. Some areas in the Gardens are not wheelchair accessible without assistance. Please check-in with Visitor Services staff upon entry to the Gardens if you need clarification on accessible routes.
Accessible parking is located in the Gardens’ parking structure and is available on a first-come first-served basis.

3. A Denver Street Art Tour
Anyone visiting Denver should take some time to embrace the Denver art scene with a walk around the River North District, or RiNo. This one area has hundreds of murals and is part of what makes Denver the street art capital of the United States.

Accessibility: The streets in the RiNo district are flat with wide sidewalks making it easy to get around. Graffiti Alley is also paved and flat. If you choose to take a group tour, the one above is wheelchair accessible.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre
4. Red Rocks Park / Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Visiting Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is hands down one of the best things to do in Denver and the surrounding area. This iconic destination combines the raw beauty of nature with the cosmic energy of live music, creating an experience unlike any other. Sadly, when we visited in late October, Denver was experiencing its first snow of the season, and our concert was canceled. But you can still tour the park and amphitheater without seeing a show.
Red Rocks Park, located just a short drive from Denver, is a geological marvel that never fails to leave visitors in awe. The colossal rocks rise from the earth, their vibrant hues illuminated by the golden light of the sun. Hidden valleys carpeted with wildflowers and groves of aromatic ponderosa pines fill the park. Red Rocks Park is also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering countless opportunities for hiking, biking, and even climbing.
However, it is the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre that truly sets this place apart. Carved into the natural rock formations, this outdoor open air venue has become synonymous with breathtaking performances and unparalleled acoustics.
While Red Rocks Amphitheatre has become famous for its legendary concerts, there is more to this site than just live music. Throughout the year, the park hosts various events, including yoga sessions, film screenings, and even sunrise services. Each experience showcases the versatility of this natural wonder, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Additionally, the Red Rocks Visitor Center provides insight into the rich history of the area and offers educational exhibits about the park's geology and wildlife. One can also explore the Trading Post, a local marketplace that features a variety of shops and eateries, allowing visitors to find unique souvenirs and savor delicious cuisine.
Accessibility: In recent years Red Rocks has made a ton of improvements to make the park and amphitheater more accessible to those with mobility impairments. The first row at the 9,525-seat venue now has wheelchair-accessible seats, after converting some of the limited-mobility seats to fully wheelchair-accessible. There are now 121 accessible seats available for their events.
Newly designated seats in rows 2 and 3 are for those with limited mobility and a section positioned directly in front of an on-stage interpreter has been created for people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, or have low vision.
Other changes, which are expected to be finished by 2025 include repaving a ramp from the shuttle area to the first row and adding handrails to both sides. A small shelter at the shuttle shop will also be added, along with more paved parking at the Upper South Lot. Improvements will be made to the slopes from the Top Circle Lot to the Visitor Center and Row 70.

Originally a cemetery named Mount Prospect, Cheesman Park has a fascinating past that adds an eerie yet captivating allure to its present-day charm. As the city expanded, the decision was made to transform the cemetery into a public park. However, the process of relocating the bodies turned out to be challenging and incomplete, creating an air of mystery and intrigue. Some speculate that the park is haunted, further deepening the park's allure.
If you’re into ghosts, it’s worth taking a stroll through the park at night to see if you can spot one of the mysterious orbs that have been reported to frequent the park.
If you visit in warmer months, the park's expansive green spaces provide visitors with ample opportunities for leisurely walks or enjoying a picnic with friends and family. The lush, meticulously manicured gardens showcase a wide array of colorful flowers and plants, making it an ideal spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Whether you're seeking solitude, looking to hike with friends, or trying to spot some haunted happenings, Cheesman Park offers the perfect environment.
The park features a network of walking and jogging paths, perfect for runners and those seeking a leisurely stroll. Outdoor fitness equipment is also installed, providing a space for workouts and exercise. Additionally, the vast open space is ideal for yoga classes, frisbee games, or simply finding a cozy spot for reading a book.
Accessibility: The Cheesman Park outer trail loop is paved and wheelchair-accessible. This 2.0-mile loop trail is generally considered an easy route and takes an average of 39 min to complete.
The Cheesman Park inner loop is also wheelchair-accessible. This 0.9-mile loop trail is generally considered an easy route and takes an average of 19 min to complete.
There are a number of benches along each trail and wheelchair-accessible parking at the trailhead.

Pike’s Peak

Need a break from the urban chaos? Want to experience tranquility and natural beauty at its finest? Look no further than the awe-inspiring Pike's Peak in Colorado. Rising magnificently above the clouds, this majestic mountain offers unparalleled views, thrilling adventures, and a serene escape from the bustle of everyday life.
The allure of Pike's Peak lies not just in its sheer height, standing tall at 14,115 feet (4,302 meters), but in the rich history and folklore that surrounds it. Once believed to be a sacred place by Native American tribes, Pike's Peak has been a source of inspiration for countless explorers, artists, and writers over the centuries. Today, it continues to captivate visitors with its untamed beauty and untold stories.
Pike's Peak offers something for everyone, from leisurely strolls through alpine meadows to daredevil adventures. One of the most popular ways to experience this natural wonder is to embark on a hike along one of the various trails that wind their way up the mountain. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a newbie, there are trails suited to all skill levels.
But if hiking isn't your cup of tea, fear not! Pike's Peak boasts the Pikes Peak Highway, a partially paved road that winds its way to the summit, allowing visitors to admire the surrounding beauty without sweating up a storm. With numerous overlooks and interpretive signs providing interesting facts about the mountain's history, geology, and wildlife, it's an enlightening journey through nature's wonders.
As you climb higher, you'll notice the temperature drop, and the air becoming crisper and thinner. The evergreen forests give way to subalpine meadows adorned with vibrant wildflowers during the summer months. Keep an eye out for grazing animals like bighorn sheep and mule deer, adding a touch of wildlife excitement to your adventure.
And when you finally reach the summit, prepare to be spellbound. On clear days, you can see as far as Colorado Springs and beyond, and witnessing a sunrise or sunset from this vantage point is an otherworldly experience that will forever be etched in your memory.
Before embarking on your Pike's Peak adventure, it's important to come well-prepared. Be sure to pack layers of clothing as the weather can change suddenly, even during the summer months. Don't forget a good pair of hiking boots, sunscreen, and plenty of water to stay hydrated along the way. If you decide to drive up the Pikes Peak Highway, keep in mind that weather conditions can affect road accessibility, so it's worth checking the latest updates before you go.

Rocky Mountain National Park is a playground for adventure enthusiasts year-round. From exhilarating hikes to adrenaline-pumping climbs, this park offers a myriad of activities to satisfy the most adventurous souls. For those wanting a more relaxed experience, the park's many scenic drives provide an opportunity to witness nature's spectacle from the comfort of a car. The famous Trail Ridge Road winds through the park, offering glimpses of jaw-dropping vistas and astonishing wildlife encounters.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Rocky Mountain National Park is its unrivaled biodiversity. As visitors explore the park's varied ecosystems, they'll encounter dense forests, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and delicate meadows hosting a plethora of unique flora and fauna. Keep a watchful eye for black bears, elk, and elusive bighorn sheep as they roam freely in their natural habitat. Summers offer mild temperatures and lush greenery, making it an ideal time for hiking and camping. Fall paints the landscapes with vibrant hues, providing a scenic backdrop for wildlife viewing. Winters dress the park in a serene blanket of snow, offering opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Accessibility: This beautiful park has many accessible facilities for visitors, including visitor centers, scenic overlooks, self-guided trails, campgrounds, picnic areas, and a backcountry campsite.

Free shuttle buses operate in the Bear Lake Corridor of the park. All park shuttle buses are accessible with wheelchair lifts and tie-downs. Bus drivers will assist passengers on and off the buses. If you need assistance, ask the bus driver.

The entire collection is presided over by a giant map tied to a time machine. The machine can be used to toggle through the map, which tells stories from different times and places in the Centennial State.
The exhibits at the History Colorado Center cover a vast expanse of time, from the ancient civilizations that once inhabited the area to the more recent events that have shaped the state's identity. The museum's comprehensive approach ensures that visitors gain a well-rounded understanding of Colorado's history.
One of the museum's standout exhibits is the "Living West," which delves into the lives of Colorado's early settlers. Through interactive displays, visitors can step into the shoes of a pioneer, experience a simulated cattle drive, or explore a replica of an old mining town. The attention to detail in these exhibits is truly remarkable, and they serve as a powerful reminder of the hardships and triumphs that shaped the state's early years.
Another highlight of the History Colorado Center is the "Denver A to Z" exhibit, which takes visitors on a journey through the ever-evolving city of Denver. From the gold rush era to the present day, this exhibit showcases the city's rich cultural heritage and highlights the important milestones that have made Denver the thriving metropolis it is today.
The museum also dedicates a significant portion of its space to the history and culture of Colorado's indigenous peoples. The exhibits not only educate visitors about the tribes that have called this land home for centuries but also emphasize the importance of preserving their traditions and honoring their contributions to the state's identity.
To further enhance the visitor experience, the History Colorado Center regularly hosts special events, lectures, and workshops. These offerings provide opportunities for even deeper engagement with the history of Colorado, allowing visitors to get hands-on with historical crafts, listen to expert presentations, and connect with fellow history enthusiasts.
Accessibility: Barrier-free doors with push-button entry are located at the museum’s main entrance on Broadway and the side entrance on 12th Avenue. Elevators are located on the north side of the building.

All restrooms throughout the museum have an accessible stall; however, the ground-floor restroom near Café Rendezvous is the only truly accessible restroom.

The Colorado State Capitol Building stands tall as a tribute to the rich history and vibrant spirit of the state. Serving as the home of the state’s government, the Capitol Building is not only an administrative hub but also a cultural icon that attracts visitors from all around the world.
The cornerstone of the Colorado State Capitol Building was laid on July 4, 1890, symbolically embodying the state's commitment to democracy and independence. Designed by renowned architect Elijah E. Myers, who also designed the famous Michigan State Capitol, this neoclassical masterpiece is a testament to Colorado’s prosperous mining era.
Drawing inspiration from the United States Capitol in Washington D.C., the building showcases its distinctive gold-plated dome, which depicts the state's significant place in the history of gold mining. The gleaming dome, consisting of 200 ounces of 24-carat gold leaf, shines brilliantly against the backdrop of Colorado's blue skies, leaving visitors in awe of its magnificence.
Upon entering, the Rotunda stands as the pulsating heart of the building. Rising 180 feet into the air, this majestic space is adorned with striking murals that depict Colorado's history and illustrate prominent figures and defining moments that shaped the state's identity.
One of the most breathtaking experiences the Capitol Building offers is a trip to the iconic Dome Observation Deck. Visitors can ascend the 99-step staircase or take the convenient elevator to reach the top. Once there, one can marvel at the panoramic views of Denver, the Rocky Mountains, and the vast expanse of Colorado's natural beauty.
To further enhance the visitor experience, the Colorado State Capitol Building offers guided tours that delve deeper into the history, architecture, and civic importance of the building. Knowledgeable guides provide captivating insights into the state's past and present, offering a unique perspective on Colorado's journey. Additionally, the Capitol Building hosts a range of engaging programs throughout the year. From educational workshops for students to cultural events celebrating the state's diversity, there is always something happening within its hallowed halls.
Accessibility: Two entrances are available for Capitol visitors. You may enter the building on the north side (Colfax and Sherman Avenues), up the stairs, or use the ADA-accessible ground-level entrance (14th and Sherman Avenues), under the stairs.

But it is not just the size and scope that make the Colorado Convention Center remarkable. The Center prides itself on being an eco-friendly facility, built with sustainability in mind. Molly Brown became renowned for her incredible resilience and courage during the tragedy of the RMS Titanic sinking in 1912. However, her legacy goes far beyond that fateful event. The museum aims to narrate the captivating story of Molly's life, highlighting her many accomplishments and her unwavering commitment to social justice and women's rights.
The first floor invites visitors to explore the grand reception hall, the parlor, and the formal dining room, all adorned with exquisite period furnishings and remarkable works of art. Walking through these rooms, it is easy to imagine the lively conversations and extravagant parties that once filled the halls.
The second floor provides a glimpse into Molly's private life, showcasing her beautifully decorated bedroom, dressing room, and her husband J.J. Brown's study. In each room, personal belongings and photographs offer an intimate look into their lives, transporting visitors back in time to the early 1900s.
However, the true highlight of the museum lies in the stories it tells. It takes visitors on a captivating journey through Molly Brown's remarkable life. This remarkable institution effortlessly blends education, entertainment, and exploration into a captivating experience for visitors of all ages. Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted by a magnificent atrium adorned with larger-than-life dinosaur skeletons.
The Earth Sciences exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the formation of our planet and the natural forces that have shaped it over billions of years. From the mesmerizing display of sparkling minerals to the interactive earthquake simulator, the museum is sure to give you an appreciation for the world around you.
The Space Odyssey exhibit is a celestial treat for astronomy enthusiasts. With its state-of-the-art planetarium and engaging displays, it’s a definite favorite at the museum.
For those curious about the mysteries of human biology and evolution, the Expedition Health exhibit presents an immersive experience. With interactive games and hands-on activities, visitors can explore the inner workings of the human body, understand the impact of lifestyle choices on health, and gain insights into medical advancements that have improved the quality of our lives.
The museum also houses a collection of art that seamlessly integrates with its scientific focus. The Wildlife Halls are a visual feast, showcasing stunning dioramas of various ecosystems and the diverse range of creatures that inhabit them. The intricate detail and lifelike replicas make you feel as though you are stepping into the wild, providing a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of life on Earth.
But the museum isn’t just dry science. The secret elves at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science are a true hidden gem. Back in the 1970s artist Kent Pendleton was hired to paint the backdrops for many of the museum’s wildlife dioramas. Much to everyone’s surprise, Pendleton snuck in tiny mythical creatures like elves, gnomes, and leprechauns. If you’ve got a good eye, you can spot an elf hiding in the lowland river or an elf riding a dinosaur. As the years passed, the museum staff decided to go along with the game, adding more elves and gnomes to the museum. There are now angels, unicorns, even a Millennium Falcon, and a tiny Yoda hidden in the museum. Word has it that there are currently 18 hidden creatures within the museum. Have fun spotting them all.
Accessibility: Three different accessible parking spaces are located in the main parking lot on the north side, in the underground parking garage (enter at the northwest corner of the lot), and on the east side of the Museum just outside the Giant Screen Theater.
Barrier-free doors with push-button entry are located at the Museum’s main entrance. Elevators are located throughout the building and an after-hours, surface-level elevator is available outside the Giant Screen Theater after 5:30 p.m.
