Exciting Day Trips From Los Angeles, CA
I may have been born in the New York City area, but I’ve lived in Los Angeles for the past 25 years and firmly consider myself an LA girl. While I adore my city, I do love a quick get-out-of-town refresh. After a quarter of a century here, I’ve done a lot of exploring. Having spent time all over Southern California, from wine country and beaches to deserts and esoteric art installations, Southern California has a lot to offer, and it’s all just a short drive from Los Angeles.
Whether you’re visiting from out of town or you’re a local looking for a change of scenery, I’ve got you covered with fabulous getaways from the City of Angels. When it comes to the best day trips from Los Angeles, CA, these are my 16 must-see spots.
Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree National Park
Distance from Los Angeles: 2 hours 15 minutes
One of my favorite Southern California day trips, Joshua Tree is known for its incredible rock formations, twisting Joshua trees, cholla cactus gardens, and winding hiking trails, but Joshua Tree isn’t just for rock climbers and hikers. The park is easily one of the most beautiful National Parks in the United States, and there are plenty of unique things to do in Joshua Tree National Park that are accessible to people with disabilities.
Part of what I love so much about Joshua Tree is that it’s very easy to drive through the park and pull over at many of the biggest attractions. One doesn’t need to hike the many trails to tour the good stuff. Though, there are a few wheelchair-accessible, easy trails most anyone can enjoy. I’ve taken elderly family members with mobility issues here on day trips from Los Angeles, and it’s always tremendous fun.
If you’re looking to stay longer than a day, you can easily camp in Joshua Tree. Wheelchair-accessible facilities are also available.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Day Trips From Los Angeles
What is the best day trip from Los Angeles?
Joshua Tree is one of the best choices for dramatic scenery, while Santa Barbara combines beaches, restaurants, history, and walkable attractions. Choose Catalina Island for a genuine change of scenery or Palm Springs for architecture, shopping and desert sunshine. The “best” destination ultimately depends on whether your ideal escape involves ocean views, mountain air or rocks that look suspiciously like prehistoric creatures.
What are the easiest day trips from Los Angeles?
Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Balboa Island, and San Juan Capistrano are among the easiest options because they are relatively close to Los Angeles. Santa Barbara and Palm Springs also work well if you leave early and avoid peak traffic. Remember that Los Angeles drive times are aspirations rather than binding promises.
How far can you realistically travel on a day trip from Los Angeles?
Destinations within approximately two hours of your starting point are usually the most comfortable choices. Longer trips to San Diego, Big Bear, Solvang, or the Salton Sea are possible, but traffic can turn them into very long days. If the drive approaches three hours each way, consider staying overnight rather than spending most of your adventure studying the vehicle ahead of you.
What time should I leave Los Angeles for a day trip?
Leave before the morning rush whenever possible, particularly when traveling south toward Orange County or San Diego. An early departure also provides more time at destinations such as Joshua Tree, Big Bear, and Solvang. Check traffic, construction, and road closures immediately before leaving because conditions can change quickly.
Are the driving times in this guide guaranteed?
No. Driving times are estimates from central Los Angeles under relatively favorable conditions and will vary according to your starting neighborhood, traffic, weather, and roadwork. Weekend beach traffic, holiday congestion and mountain weather can add considerable time in either direction.
Do I need a car for these Los Angeles day trips?
A car provides the greatest flexibility for Joshua Tree, Palm Springs, Big Bear, Idyllwild, Ojai and the Salton Sea. It also makes it easier to carry water, food, mobility equipment, and anything else your body may unexpectedly demand. Some coastal and historic destinations can be reached by train, ferry, or organized tour.
Which day trips from Los Angeles can I take without a car?
Santa Barbara, San Juan Capistrano and San Diego may be reached using Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner, depending on the current schedule and any service disruptions. Catalina Island requires a ferry from the mainland, although you will still need transportation to the departure port. Review the latest Pacific Surfliner schedules and alerts before planning a car-free trip.
What is the best beach day trip from Los Angeles?
Laguna Beach is a strong choice for coves, tide pools, art galleries, and coastal scenery. Newport Beach and Balboa Island offer harbor activities, shops and restaurants, while Santa Barbara combines its beaches with cultural attractions. Your choice may depend less on which beach is prettiest and more on how much traffic you are prepared to negotiate for it.
What is the best nature day trip from Los Angeles?
Joshua Tree is excellent for desert landscapes and scenic drives, while Big Bear and Idyllwild offer mountain scenery and cooler temperatures. Ojai combines gentle outdoor activities with shops, restaurants, and spas. Channel Islands National Park provides the wildest experience but requires considerably more planning and physical effort.
What are the most unusual day trips from Los Angeles?
Salvation Mountain, East Jesus, the Salton Sea, Cabazon Dinosaurs and Newport Beach’s Bunnyhenge are among the strangest options. These destinations are ideal for travelers who prefer eccentric roadside attractions to polished theme parks. Bring water, sun protection, and a healthy respect for how remote the desert can become.
Is Joshua Tree possible as a day trip from Los Angeles?
Yes, but leave early and focus on a limited number of stops rather than attempting to explore the entire park. A scenic drive with places such as Keys View, Skull Rock, and accessible nature trails can provide an excellent introduction. Joshua Tree has limited cell reception and no water, restaurants, or gas stations inside the park, so review the National Park Service planning information and bring supplies.
Is Joshua Tree National Park wheelchair accessible?
Joshua Tree offers accessible visitor facilities, viewpoints and selected trails, although much of the park consists of sand, rocks and uneven natural terrain. Accessibility varies considerably between locations, so consult the park’s mobility accessibility information before choosing stops. A scenic driving itinerary can be an enjoyable alternative when hiking is not suitable.
Can Catalina Island be visited in one day?
Yes. Reserve an early ferry to Avalon and a late-enough return so you have meaningful time on the island. Include the drive to the port, parking, check-in, and boarding in your schedule—the ferry may take about an hour, but the complete journey has additional opinions about your timetable.
Is the ferry to Catalina Island wheelchair accessible?
Catalina Express states that its ports are wheelchair accessible, but restroom doorways on certain vessels may not accommodate every wheelchair or mobility scooter. Travelers who require assistance or have a large mobility device should contact the ferry company before booking. Review its current accessibility and travel policies for details.
Is San Diego too far for a day trip from Los Angeles?
San Diego is possible as a long day trip, especially by train, but traffic can make driving exhausting. Choose one area—such as Balboa Park, the waterfront, or La Jolla—instead of attempting the entire city. An overnight stay is a better option if you want to visit several major attractions without turning the day into an endurance event.
Can I visit Santa Barbara from Los Angeles without driving?
Yes. The Pacific Surfliner connects Los Angeles with Santa Barbara, and the station is convenient for the waterfront and Funk Zone. Check the current timetable carefully because the final return train may limit how late you can stay.
Is Palm Springs a good summer day trip?
Palm Springs can be extremely hot during summer, particularly during the afternoon. Plan indoor attractions, start outdoor sightseeing early, and carry more water than you think you will need. Travelers with heat intolerance may find late fall through early spring considerably more comfortable.
Is Laguna Beach accessible for wheelchair users?
Parts of Laguna Beach, including areas around Main Beach and Heisler Park, offer paved routes and accessible facilities. Other locations involve slopes, stairs, sand, or uneven paths. Thousand Steps Beach requires descending a long staircase and does not have a step-free beach entrance, regardless of its cheerfully misleading name.
Is Balboa Island the same as Newport Beach?
Balboa Island is a small community within Newport Beach, connected to the mainland by bridge and to the Balboa Peninsula by ferry. You can explore Marine Avenue, eat a frozen banana, and then continue to the Fun Zone or other Newport Beach attractions. Combining the two areas creates an easy coastal day trip.
Is Big Bear a good winter day trip from Los Angeles?
Big Bear can be beautiful in winter, but snow, ice, chain controls, and heavy weekend traffic may make the journey significantly longer. Tire chains must be carried during the winter season, even when installation is not immediately required. Check Big Bear road and weather conditions and Caltrans information before leaving.
Is Solvang worth visiting for one day?
Yes. One day provides enough time to explore Solvang’s Danish-style center, sample pastries, visit Mission Santa Inés, and browse the shops. Wine tasting, nearby Santa Ynez Valley towns, and additional museums can easily fill a longer stay if you decide that one pastry was clearly insufficient research.
Can Channel Islands National Park be visited as a day trip?
Yes, but the trip requires an advance boat reservation and an early departure for Ventura or Oxnard. Add driving, parking, check-in, and boat travel to the time spent on the island. Boats do not travel to every island every day, so check schedules and reserve directly through Island Packers.
Is Channel Islands National Park wheelchair accessible?
Accessibility is extremely limited because of the boat transfers, rugged terrain, and island landing arrangements. The National Park Service states that limited access may be available on concessionaire boats and planes, but visitors should contact the operator and park before booking. Review the park’s physical and mobility accessibility guidance for island-specific information.
Is the Salton Sea suitable for a day trip from Los Angeles?
The Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain and East Jesus can be combined into a long desert day trip, but the route involves considerable driving and limited services. Carry water, food, fuel, and any medication you may need, and avoid relying on consistent cell reception. Staying overnight near Palm Springs or Borrego Springs can make the journey more manageable.
Is Salvation Mountain wheelchair accessible?
Visitors can view portions of Salvation Mountain from relatively close to the parking area, but the surrounding desert surface may be uneven, loose, or muddy. Step-free does not necessarily mean smooth, firm, or easy to navigate. Contact the site directly if you need confirmation about current surfaces, parking, or mobility-device access.
When is the best time to see wildflowers near Lancaster?
The Antelope Valley wildflower season generally runs from mid-February through May, but its timing and intensity vary every year according to rainfall, temperature, and wind. A spectacular “superbloom” is not guaranteed annually. Check the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve and its live updates before making the drive.
What is the best Los Angeles day trip during winter?
Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, San Diego, and the Orange County beach towns typically offer pleasant winter sightseeing opportunities. Mountain destinations may have snow and chain controls, while desert mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cold. Check the forecast for your specific destination instead of dressing for Los Angeles and hoping California maintains a single climate.
What is the best Los Angeles day trip during summer?
Santa Barbara, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Balboa Island and Catalina Island provide coastal alternatives to inland heat. Big Bear and Idyllwild may also offer cooler mountain temperatures. Avoid strenuous desert sightseeing during the hottest part of the day, particularly if heat worsens an existing health condition.
Which day trips are best for travelers with limited mobility?
Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, San Juan Capistrano, Balboa Island and parts of Catalina’s Avalon can be easier to customize around shorter distances and seated attractions. Accessibility still varies between businesses, sidewalks, beaches, and historic properties. Choose a small geographic area and verify parking, entrances, restrooms, and transportation before traveling.
How can I make a Los Angeles day trip manageable with a chronic illness?
Select one primary attraction and treat everything else as optional. Schedule rest stops, bring food and medication, and avoid booking an itinerary that depends on flawless traffic or unlimited energy. A successful day trip ends with good memories, not an involuntary three-day recovery period.
Which day trips require advance reservations?
Reserve Catalina ferries, Channel Islands boat transportation, popular tours, and any timed attractions in advance. Weekend restaurants, Palm Springs experiences, and seasonal activities in Big Bear may also fill quickly. Keep the reservation schedule flexible enough to accommodate traffic, parking, and rest breaks.
Should I take a guided tour or travel independently?
A guided tour can reduce the stress of driving and parking at destinations such as Joshua Tree, San Diego, or the desert attractions. Independent travel provides greater flexibility for rest, accessibility needs, and spontaneous schedule changes. Before booking a tour, confirm the vehicle type, step height, seating, restroom stops and mobility-device policy.
What should I pack for a day trip from Los Angeles?
Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, layers, medication, a charging cable, and offline directions. Mountain, desert, and coastal destinations can have very different weather from Los Angeles on the same day. Add traction equipment for winter mountain trips and seasickness medication for boat excursions if appropriate for you.
Should I stay overnight instead of taking a day trip?
Consider an overnight stay for San Diego, Big Bear, Solvang, the Salton Sea, or any destination requiring more than two and a half hours of driving each way. Staying overnight also makes sense when fatigue, pain, or unpredictable symptoms limit how long you can travel comfortably. There is no prize for returning to Los Angeles at midnight fueled entirely by caffeine and poor judgment.
