Houston, Texas: Things To Do And Why To Visit
I’ve been visiting the greater Houston area for the last few years in order to speak to some film students about what it’s like to work in the TV industry. Yes, when I’m not blogging I’m actually a Television comedy writer. Because of work and other scheduling conflicts, I had always made these annual trips to Houston brief and never stuck around to tour the city. However, when it came time for this year’s trip, I decided I had to carve out the time to experience the fifth largest city in the United States and see some of the top Houston attractions.
While the city may not be on your radar, there are actually plenty of fun things to do in Houston, TX. Houstonians are fiercely proud of their city, as well as its diversity, and its incredible food. They’re also incredibly welcoming. I couldn’t get into a Lyft without the driver welcoming me to town and giving me a recommendation for something amazing to see or eat.
I’m happy I finally got to spend five days in Houston and I’m thrilled I can now pass along what I’ve learned to you, my readers.

How To Get To Houston
Houston, the largest city in Texas, is a vibrant and diverse destination that attracts tourists from all over the world. Whether you're an avid traveler seeking new experiences or simply planning to visit to family or friends, it's essential to know the best ways to get to Houston. Here are your options:
By Air
Houston is served by two major airports: George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). These airports provide excellent connections to both domestic and international destinations, making air travel a convenient option.
1. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH): Located approximately 23 miles north of downtown Houston, IAH is the city's primary international airport. It offers a wide range of airlines and destinations, with numerous flights arriving and departing daily.
2. William P. Hobby Airport (HOU): Situated about 7 miles south of downtown Houston, HOU mainly serves domestic flights. It tends to be less crowded than IAH and is a convenient choice for travelers within the United States.
From either airport, you can easily catch a taxi, rideshare service, or shuttle to your destination in Houston.
By Car
Houston is well-connected to major highways, making it accessible by car. If you prefer the freedom of a road trip or plan to explore the surrounding areas, driving to Houston might be the right choice for you. Here are a few key routes to consider:
1. Interstate 10 (I-10): If you're coming from the east (e.g., Louisiana, Florida), I-10 will lead you straight into Houston.
2. Interstate 45 (I-45): Travelers from the north (e.g., Dallas, Oklahoma) can take I-45, which connects directly to Houston.
3. Interstate 35 (I-35): If you're driving from the northwest (e.g., Austin, San Antonio), I-35 will guide you to Houston.

By Bus

Getting Around Houston
Houston is a sprawling metropolis. Navigating this bustling city may seem daunting at first, but fear not! It does have a decent public transportation system. With a variety of transportation options available, getting around Houston can be both efficient and enjoyable. Here are some tips on how to explore the city:
1. Metro Rail
The METRORail, Houston's light rail system, is a convenient and affordable way to travel within the city. With three lines - Red, Green, and Purple - the METRORail connects several popular destinations, including downtown, the Museum District, and the Texas Medical Center. You can purchase a reloadable Q-Card for easy and cashless travel on the rail.
2. Buses
Houston's bus network is extensive, catering to various neighborhoods across the city. Getting around Houston by bus is easy and efficient. Remember to have exact change or a Q-Card when boarding the bus.
3. Ride-Sharing Services
Popular ride-sharing apps, such as Uber and Lyft, are readily available in Houston. These services provide a convenient way to get around the city, especially if you prefer door-to-door transportation. It’s also a nice way to get tips on all the hottest new places to eat.
4. Bicycles and Scooters
Houston's extensive system of trails and bike lanes makes cycling a fun and eco-friendly option for exploring the city. You can rent bicycles or scooters through various apps like BCycle and Lime. Just make sure to follow safety guidelines and be aware of traffic when cycling.

Best Time To Visit Houston
The ideal time to explore Houston is during the months of October to April. Here's why:
Weather
Houston's climate is known for its hot and humid summers, but during the fall and winter months, the weather becomes more pleasant and mild. From October to April, you can enjoy cooler temperatures ranging from the 60s to the 70s Fahrenheit (15 to 25 degrees Celsius), making it perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the city's numerous parks, gardens, and trails.
Festivals and Events
Houston is famous for its cultural events and festivals, which are held throughout the year. However, the months of October to April bring some of the most exhilarating and diverse celebrations. In October, visitors can indulge in the Houston Italian Festival, showcasing Italian cuisine, music, and art. December is packed with festive events, including the Annual Mayor's Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting and the Houston Ballet's performance of "The Nutcracker."
Outdoor Exploration
Houston is blessed with beautiful parks and outdoor spaces, and the cooler months provide the perfect opportunity to fully enjoy them. Places like Hermann Park, Buffalo Bayou Park, and Discovery Green offer fantastic walking and biking trails, picnic spots, and even paddleboarding. The comfortable temperatures make it pleasant to spend hours exploring these green havens without the discomfort of excessive heat.
Lower Tourism Volume
Another advantage of visiting Houston during the off-peak season is the lower tourist volume. The fall and winter months see fewer tourists, allowing you to explore popular attractions without the crowds. You can take your time admiring the masterpieces at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston or exploring the impressive Houston Museum of Natural Science without feeling rushed or dealing with long lines.

Where To Stay In Houston
On my trip to Houston, I stayed at the Houston Marriot Medical Center/Museum District. The hotel is wheelchair-accessible and located in close proximity to Houston’s many museums. It’s also located in close proximity to Houston’s many top-notch hospitals. The Marriot offers sleek guest rooms with high-speed internet and luxury bedding. Guests can explore the best of Houston on the MetroRail just outside the front door or take a quick ride to top Houston attractions such as the Hermann Park, Museum of Natural Science, or the Children’s Museum, all less than 2 miles away. 9. Houston Astros Minute Maid Park
I’m a bit obsessed with visiting every baseball park in the country. I find them each so unique and special in their own way. Minute Maid Park was no exception. With its state-of-the-art facilities and unique architectural design, Minute Maid Park, nicknamed “the juice box,” creates an unforgettable experience for all who enter its gates. As the home of the Houston Astros, the ballpark exudes an electric atmosphere on game days, with the roar of the crowd and the crack of the bat echoing through its halls.
The park was constructed on the site of the one-time railway stop, Union Station, and thus incorporates a lot of the original train depot design into the park. The retractable roof is closed for most games but opens when the temperatures drop below 85 degrees.
Whether you're savoring a hot dog in the stands or exploring the various entertainment options within its walls, Minute Maid Park is a must-visit destination for any avid sports traveler.

The Post looks like an unassuming postal office from the outside, but inside it’s a haven for food enthusiasts. The building houses an array of gastronomic delights, boasting a diverse tapestry of flavors. From farm-to-table bistros to international fusion eateries, there is no shortage of culinary experiences to satisfy even the most discerning palate. I enjoyed a Korean rice bowl that honestly was one of the best bowls I’ve had outside of LA’s Koreatown. (I’ve sadly never been to Korea.)
