Cool Restaurants In Barcelona
If you’re looking for the best food in Barcelona, you’ve come to the right place. On my recent trip to Barcelona, I was on a foodie quest. After putting in a ton of research and reading all the top food critics and website reviews, I made a list of food I simply had to try.
During my stay, I managed to eat at some pretty cool restaurants in Barcelona and enjoyed a variety of tapas, seafood, and Catalan cuisine. The restaurants in this city wowed me with their incredible flavors, relative affordability, and stunning ambiance.
In this post, I’ll share with you my favorite dishes and my picks for the best restaurants in Barcelona, Spain. My recommendations cover everything from low-key breakfast and brunch spots to five-star fine dining for dinner. This list has something for everyone, including those of you who are vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free.
Read on for the best restaurants Barcelona has to offer!

Yellowtail fish “aguachile” & chips Teatro Kitchen & Bar
Teatro Kitchen and Bar
Teatro offers a theatrical presentation of some of the best food in Barcelona. Upon entering Teatro, you’re given tickets, then escorted to a table for their open kitchen dining experience. Teatro serves up mouth-watering tapas in 5 acts cooked by a team with Michelin dining pedigrees.
Diners are offered the opportunity for an a la carte dining experience or a “surprise show” in which the chef selects a tasting menu based on your tastes and preferences.

Arabian lamb tacos Teatro Kitchen & Bar
We elected to do an à la carte experience as there were dishes we were simply dying to try. Some of my favorite dishes were the Yellowtail fish “aguachile” & chips, the Arabian lamb tacos, and the pork jowl saam with “anticuchera” sauce. It’s recommended you order 7-10 of their small plate dishes meant for sharing. Each dish was truly outstanding and presented with an artful flair.
At the end of the show, you’re offered the opportunity to go “Backstage”, an adjoining cocktail bar that’s the perfect place to wrap up your night. I highly recommend it as their drinks are also mind-blowingly creative and positively delicious.

2. Maleducat
Maleducat is the creation of chef Victor Ródenas and brothers Ignasi and Marc García. The restaurant offers a take on a simple Catalan casa de menjars (house of food). The dishes are made of fresh, seasonal ingredients. Maleducat has a brief but varied menu that’s sure to satisfy. And for those with more adventurous palates, there are daily specials depending on the season and market.
Menu highlights are Bluefin red tuna tartare, smoked egg yolk, miso and pickles, Traditional Catalan noodles with Iberian pork rib, cod tripe and mushrooms, and Pluma of Iberian pork, fine garlic crème, roasted red pepper, watercress and mustards.

4. Sensato
Every great restaurant list needs a killer sushi place, and Sensato is my pick for Barcelona. Chef Ryuta Sato opened this tiny sushi bar with just eight seats, specializing in premium omakase. The only downside, you’ll definitely need to score reservations well in advance, given the tiny space.

Burrata, pea salad, morels in sauce, croutons, Benzina
5. Benzina
I was a bit reticent to try Italian food in Barcelona given the many great Spanish restaurants I wanted to try in my short time in the city, but the word of mouth was just too good when it came to Benzina. I’m so glad I did give it a try because it was hands down one of the best meals I had during my stay.
Owner Badr Bennis and head chef Nicola Valle were inspired by the creative Italian restaurants in New York. The restaurant is housed in a former auto repair shop, in the Sant Antoni neighborhood, hence the name Benzina, which is Italian for gasoline.

spaghetti quadrati alla carbonara, guanciale, Parmigiano Reggiano 24 months, pecorino, egg Benzina
Benzina serves a menu of updated Italian classics, incorporating international influences and non-traditional ingredients. Our standout dishes were burrata, pea salad, morels in sauce with croutons, spaghetti quadrati alla carbonara, guanciale, Parmigiano Reggiano 24 months, pecorino, egg, and linguine aglio, olio, peperoncino, lobster, avocado, cardamom oil.
We were so stuffed we couldn’t even think of dessert, but our waiter teased that he would have it delivered to our hotel later. I seriously loved this place.

Located on the restaurant-rich street of Carrer del Parlament, El Sortidors Del Parlament is a classic-meets-modern bodega. 7. Suculent
Suculent’s tasting menus are out of this world. They also offer an à la carte menu if you’d like to pick and choose your own dishes from their incredible list. It’s a favorite among chefs and tops every best-of-Barcelona food list. Suculent specializes in Catalan comfort food with influences from Asia and Latin America. Dishes change with the seasons, but highlights include Marasca peas with pods jus, Iberian pork jowl, and oysters, beetroot with “beurre blanc” sauce, smoked eel and tarragon oil, and crispy suckling pig with its juice and pickles. …My mouth is watering just typing this.

9. Can Fisher
For the absolute best rice, fish, and seafood dishes, head to Can Fisher. It’s hands down one of the best places to eat in Barcelona. The beautiful beach setting reminded me of my Southern California home, and the food was some of the best I had during my stay in Spain. Fresh fish are caught daily and presented to you for your selection at the table.

Can Fisher
We ordered the steak tartare, marrow, and toasted bread with smoked butter, the creamy rice with morels, shredded sausage, and Iberian bacon, and the Mediterranean red tuna, gordal olives, chargrilled pickled onion, and smoked pickled vinaigrette. Everything was positively mind-blowing. I was also impressed with the gluten-free bread I had substituted for my steak tartare. Bread really is better in Europe, including gluten-free bread.

Can Fisher has a cool and fresh atmosphere, offering an informal setting on a terrace with incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by plants and flowers. If you’re looking for one of the best restaurants in Barcelona with a view, it’s hard to beat the sparkling blue Mediterranean.
Another highlight was their white wine sangria, a delicious fruity blend delivered in a massive pitcher.

Like many tapas restaurants in Spain, the menu is low on vegetarian options, but if you like seafood, you’re sure to love the selection.

Cannelloni Cervecería Ciudad Condal
We didn’t have reservations when we visited, and despite the huge areas of indoor and outdoor seating, it took about 20 minutes to get a table. But it was well worth the wait.

In the middle of “Aragón Street”, next to “Paseo de Gracia”, it stands out for “slow fire” dishes, such as the famous octopus with onions, the chicken cannelloni with trumpets of death, the prawns with kimchi, the fried rice, the vegetables and shitake, and the iconic Fideua with prawns, clams and “aioli.” though we dined on more traditional fare, favoring the steak with french fries and the artichokes with Iberian ham.

You’ll want to get a seat along the bar for views of the open kitchen.
The menu of tapas and larger plates changes seasonally to ensure the freshest ingredients. Standout dishes include specialties like giant red prawns, sea anemones with cured Iberian pork belly, and runny potato omelets.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this list of cool restaurants in Barcelona. Keep in mind that dinner starts at 8 pm at most Barcelona restaurants. Make sure you have a good lunch if you’re doing a lot of walking around because the earliest reservations we could get for dinner were 7:30 pm. On the positive side, it was good to have worked up an appetite seeing the sites, as we were able to enjoy a wonderful array of food.
Frequently Asked Questions About Cool Restaurants in Barcelona
What is the coolest restaurant in Barcelona?
Teatro Kitchen & Bar is one of Barcelona’s most unusual dining experiences. Its theatrical concept, open kitchen, imaginative small plates, and adjoining Backstage cocktail bar turn dinner into an entire evening’s entertainment. Choose the chef’s surprise menu if you enjoy delicious food accompanied by an element of suspense.
What are the best restaurants in Barcelona?
My personal favorites include Benzina for inventive Italian food, Can Fisher for seafood beside the Mediterranean, and Teatro Kitchen & Bar for creative small plates. Cinc Sentits, Sensato and Suculent are excellent choices for a special occasion. The best restaurant ultimately depends on whether you want tapas, seafood, pizza, a tasting menu, or a fried chicken sandwich the size of your immediate ambitions.
Where can I try traditional Catalan food in Barcelona?
Maleducat, Suculent, Berbena and Ultramarinos Marín serve contemporary interpretations of Catalan cooking using seasonal ingredients. For a more casual experience, try a neighborhood bodega such as El Sortidors del Parlament. Menus change regularly because many restaurants cook according to the season and what is available at the market.
What are the best tapas restaurants in Barcelona?
Bar Cañete, Cervecería Ciudad Condal and Mont Bar are all excellent choices for tapas and shareable plates. Bar Cañete focuses on premium seafood and seasonal ingredients, while Ciudad Condal offers an enormous selection in a lively setting. Mont Bar is ideal for adventurous diners who want refined, snack-sized dishes.
Where can I find the best seafood in Barcelona?
Can Fisher is my top choice for rice, fresh fish, and seafood accompanied by Mediterranean views. Cova Fumada is a more traditional option known for grilled seafood and the original bomba de la Barceloneta. Bar Cañete is another excellent choice if you want premium seafood served in a bustling tapas-bar atmosphere.
Which Barcelona restaurant has the best view?
Can Fisher has a beautiful terrace overlooking the Mediterranean near Bogatell Beach. The relaxed atmosphere makes it particularly enjoyable for a long lunch with seafood, rice, and sangria. Reserve an outdoor table and confirm that the terrace is open if the view is an important part of your plans.
What is the best pizza restaurant in Barcelona?
Sartoria Panatieri is one of the city’s most celebrated pizza restaurants. Its pizzas feature organic flour, house-made cured meats and seasonal ingredients sourced from local producers. There are locations in Gràcia and Eixample, so confirm which one you are booking before setting off in pursuit of carbohydrates.
What are the best fine-dining restaurants in Barcelona?
Cinc Sentits offers an elegant tasting-menu experience centered on modern Catalan cuisine. Sensato is an intimate omakase restaurant with only a handful of seats, while Suculent combines fine-dining techniques with the comforting flavors of Catalan cooking. Reserve all three well in advance.
Are there affordable restaurants in Barcelona?
Yes. La Rita, Oviso, Rooq, Cova Fumada and many neighborhood tapas bars offer less expensive alternatives to Barcelona’s tasting menus. A weekday fixed-price lunch, known as a menú del día, can also provide excellent value. Affordable does not necessarily mean deserted, however, so popular restaurants may still require a reservation or a patient wait.
Do Barcelona restaurants require reservations?
Popular restaurants should be reserved in advance, particularly for dinner on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Tiny restaurants such as Sensato and highly regarded tasting-menu restaurants may fill weeks ahead. Casual tapas bars sometimes accept walk-ins, but arriving early can reduce the wait.
What time do people eat dinner in Barcelona?
Dinner commonly begins later than it does in the United States, with many restaurants becoming busiest between 9 and 10 p.m. Some kitchens do not open for dinner until 7:30 or 8 p.m. Check the restaurant’s current hours rather than assuming you can obtain a full meal at 5:30 p.m., when Barcelona may still consider you to be having a late afternoon snack.
What time is lunch in Barcelona?
Lunch is normally served between approximately 1 and 4 p.m. Many restaurants offer a weekday menú del día containing several courses for a fixed price. A substantial lunch is especially helpful if your preferred dinner reservation is not until later in the evening.
How do you order tapas in Barcelona?
Order several small dishes for the table and add more if everyone is still hungry. The number needed depends on the size of the dishes, so ask the server for guidance rather than ordering the entire menu in a moment of anchovy-fueled excitement. Tapas are designed for sharing, although defending your favorite plate is between you and your dining companions.
Are Barcelona restaurants suitable for solo diners?
Barcelona is an excellent city for dining alone. Counter seats, wine bars, tapas restaurants, and casual cafés allow solo travelers to order a few dishes without committing to an enormous meal. Reserve a counter seat when possible and avoid worrying that everyone is watching you—they are far too occupied with their own croquettes.
Do restaurants in Barcelona have vegetarian and vegan options?
Many restaurants provide vegetarian dishes, although traditional tapas menus can be heavily focused on meat and seafood. Mikan, Little Andaman and La Balabusta are among the restaurants in this guide with plant-based choices. Barcelona’s official restaurant directory can also be filtered when searching for additional options.
Is it easy to find gluten-free food in Barcelona?
Barcelona has a growing selection of gluten-free restaurants, bakeries, and menu options. Can Fisher provided excellent gluten-free bread during my visit, while Little Andaman also offered several suitable dishes. Travelers with celiac disease should still ask about ingredients, preparation areas, shared fryers, and cross-contact because “gluten-free” can describe anything from a carefully controlled meal to a well-meaning piece of bread sitting beside a flour-covered kitchen.
Can Barcelona restaurants accommodate food allergies?
Many restaurants can adjust dishes when notified in advance, but tasting menus and small kitchens may have limited flexibility. Contact the restaurant before booking and describe the allergy clearly in writing. Confirm the information again when you arrive, particularly if cross-contact could cause a serious reaction.
Is English spoken in Barcelona restaurants?
English menus and English-speaking staff are common in popular visitor areas and upscale restaurants. Smaller neighborhood establishments may have limited English, but translation apps can help. Learning basic words such as gràcies, si us plau, and el compte is both useful and polite.
How expensive are Barcelona restaurants?
Barcelona offers everything from inexpensive sandwiches and tapas to elaborate Michelin-starred tasting menus. Prices rise quickly when you add wine, cocktails, and numerous small plates, each of which appears financially harmless until they form an organized group on the bill. Review the current menu online when working with a specific budget.
Should you tip at restaurants in Barcelona?
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in the same way it is in the United States. For casual meals, diners often round up or leave a few euros for good service. At an upscale restaurant, a modest percentage may be left for exceptional service, but you do not need to add an automatic 20 percent.
Is there a dress code at Barcelona restaurants?
Most Barcelona restaurants have a stylish but relaxed atmosphere. Smart-casual clothing is appropriate for fine dining, while casual clothing works for tapas bars, beach restaurants and neighborhood cafés. Check the restaurant’s policy for a special tasting menu, and avoid arriving at an elegant dining room dressed as though you became separated from a beach volleyball tournament.
Which Barcelona neighborhoods are best for restaurants?
Eixample has one of the widest selections, including fine dining, international cuisine and fashionable neighborhood restaurants. Sant Antoni is excellent for wine bars and creative casual dining, while Gràcia offers smaller local restaurants. Barceloneta and the beachfront are natural choices for seafood, and Ciutat Vella contains everything from historic tapas bars to modern tasting menus.
Are restaurants in Barcelona wheelchair accessible?
Accessibility varies considerably. Modern restaurants may have step-free entrances and spacious dining rooms, while older venues can have narrow doorways, entrance steps, closely packed tables or restrooms located downstairs. Never rely solely on the word “accessible”; contact the restaurant and confirm the entrance, table clearance, and restroom before booking.
Do Barcelona restaurants have accessible restrooms?
Some do, but a step-free dining room does not guarantee an accessible restroom. Ask whether the toilet is on the same floor, whether there are grab bars, and whether the doorway and turning space can accommodate your mobility device. Photos and measurements are more useful than a cheerful assurance that there is “only one little step.”
Are restaurant terraces in Barcelona wheelchair accessible?
Many terraces are easier to access than historic interiors, but curb heights, uneven pavement and tightly arranged tables can still create obstacles. Ask the restaurant to reserve a table with enough space for your wheelchair or mobility aid. Outdoor seating may also be more comfortable for diners who find crowded interiors difficult.
Which restaurants are best for diners with sensory sensitivities?
Choose a quiet lunch reservation, request a table away from speakers, and avoid peak dining hours. Teatro, Mikan and Bar Brutal can become lively, while intimate restaurants may place tables close together. Noise-canceling earplugs can be useful because Barcelona’s most atmospheric restaurants are sometimes atmospheric at considerable volume.
How can I enjoy Barcelona restaurants with a chronic illness?
Make lunch your main meal if your energy is better earlier in the day, and reserve restaurants close to that day’s attractions or hotel. Request a comfortable chair, confirm restroom access, and avoid scheduling a long tasting menu after an exhausting sightseeing day. It is perfectly acceptable to cancel the fourth round of tapas and return to bed; the patatas bravas will recover emotionally.
Are tasting menus suitable for travelers with limited stamina?
Tasting menus may last several hours, which can be tiring for anyone who struggles to remain seated or upright for long periods. Ask how long the meal normally takes, whether breaks are possible, and whether the restaurant can provide supportive seating. An à la carte meal may offer the same excellent cooking with less physical commitment.
Are restaurant hours in Barcelona reliable online?
Hours, menus and reservation policies can change seasonally, and some restaurants close for several weeks during summer holidays. Always check the restaurant’s official website or social media shortly before visiting. This is particularly important for small restaurants, lunch-only establishments and places that operate on limited days.
What foods should I try in Barcelona?
Look for pa amb tomàquet, bombas, croquettes, jamón ibérico, grilled seafood, anchovies, seasonal mushrooms and Catalan rice dishes. Crema catalana makes an excellent dessert, assuming you have not already ordered enough small plates to require structural reinforcement. Trying a mixture of traditional dishes and contemporary Catalan cooking provides the best introduction to the city’s food scene.
